Hivos is an international organisation that seeks new solutions to persistent global issues.
With smart projects in the right places, we oppose discrimination, inequality, abuse of power and the unsustainable use of our planet’s resources. Counterbalance alone, however, is not enough. Our primary focus is achieving structural change. This is why we cooperate with innovative businesses, citizens and their organisations. We share a dream with them of sustainable economies and inclusive societies.
Freedom and accountability are essential for such societies, where people feel free and safe to express themselves, where they have the information and opportunities to make informed decisions and where they are empowered to hold government and companies to account. However, governments are increasingly suppressing independent groups that share alternative views. This situation has a profound impact on the space for dialogue and debate.
We aim for a world where public procurement is transparent, fair and inclusive and is systematically used by governments to realize people’s rights and advance sustainable development.
To contribute to this vision, we aim for civil society organizations, independent journalists, hacktivists, artists, cultural producers, academics and civic watchdogs, and others to make wide-ranging information accessible and usable for citizens who wish to hold governments and companies to account. We want powerholders to have a more open and responsive attitude towards transparent and accountable governance.
Using a rights-based approach, Hivos works with pioneers and frontline organizations in the field of Transparency, Accountability and Participation (TAP), as well as champions in government.
We support them in the co-creation of solutions to the problems that they prioritize, and to engage in multi-actor initiatives that strengthen civic power. In this, we aim to nurture and support sustainable ecosystems for accountability.
